2001 English Language Travel Camp Ameson Institute for Foreign Languages at Nanjing sponsored "2001 English Language Travel Camp". Primary and middle school students all over the country applied for it. The program lasted for one month, beginning July 5 and ending August 1,2001, and divided into two sessions. Each session consisted of 14 days, and two travel routes, route A and route C: Route A covered three cities, Nanjing, Xi'an and Beijing. Route C covered six cities, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Ningbo, Shanghai and Suzhou. The first session had about 90 participants, and the second session about 50 ones, all from Jiangsu, Anhui and Shandong Provinces. The first four days of the session was mostly an indoor teaching process, for the participants to learn some useful teaching materials, and to get familiar with the Volunteers (foreign teachers). After that was the ten days of travel follows. During this period, Volunteers (foreign teachers) taught students English based on what they saw in each place of interest. Every 8~10 students had a Volunteer (foreign teacher) accompanying with them. Both volunteers and students lived, studied and traveled together. Students were requested to write an English diary everyday. By doing all of these, students have improved their English- comprehending, speaking and writing skills. The Camp combined indoor small class teaching with outdoor real situation settings in travel, and has been proven to have a very good effect. The 15 Volunteers (foreign teachers) participated in this activity were all interviewed by the Ameson Education and Culture Exchange Foundation, and selected from hundreds of candidates. They all had plenty of experience in English teaching and social practice. And it also gave these foreign teachers further and more direct understanding of the culture, tradition and scene of China. This Camp has made an extensive influence in society,
especially among the primary and middle school students. An investigation
of the participants had shown that senior students have improved their
ability of English comprehension, speech and writing and the junior
students had more interest in learning English. They had all expressed
their interest to take part in similar Camps in the future.
