US High School Program: AP in China

A
meson's US High School Program was designed to help contribute towards building a clear channel through which elite Chinese students can pursue a world-class education overseas, particularly in the US.

The program offers Advanced Placement, or AP, courses to Chinese students which are taught entirely in English. AP courses are designed to prepare English-speaking high schools students with the rigor of college-level courses. Students enrolled in the US High School Program have the option of taking various AP courses including English literature, world history, US government and politics, chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, statistics, calculus and micro and macroeconomics.

Taught by a combination of Chinese and foreign expert teachers, the courses curriculum and the lessons are guided by a College Board-approved syllabus.

About Advanced Placement

AP Courses are for high school students ready to take on the challenges of university-level courses. Designed by the College Board in collaboration with scholars from Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Stanford Universities, the AP program is globally accredited and widely respected.

In addition to the AP courses students can take in high school, there are also AP examinations as a standardized way to test students’ knowledge of the material. These examinations are a way asses students’ ability on the subject and are a key factor for university admissions and a way to receive college course credit.

Currently, world-leading universities from more than 50 countries worldwide (including the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, etc) use the AP examination as an important criterion for admission.

Students enrolled in the US High School Program and in AP courses take on new challenges as instructors generally push students beyond the high school level to a higher level of analysis and critical thinking. This effectively prepares students for the challenges of the AP exam. In addition, it also teaches students how to extensively investigate subjects and develop their own ideas and learning strategies to help them for the rigor of university courses. A recent survey of 1,150 Yale applicants showed that candidates' AP Exam scores averaged 4.95 on a 5 point scale.

AP Advantages

  • AP examination results are recognized as a key admission component for applicants at more than 5,000 universities in 50 different countries.
  • It is possible to receive college credit for your AP scores. Some schools will allow the student to opt out of a freshman or beginning level course if a student scores a 3, 4 or a 5 on the AP exam.
  • AP classes look good on your record, but AP exams are what the universities and colleges look at for admission. AP exams tests cover a broad range of material covered in the course, as indicated by the College Board, and are graded in a 5-point increment (5 is the highest, 1 is the lowest.)

Past Ameson AP Students

Ameson students have proven to do very well in the AP Courses and on the AP exams. Their achievements in the classroom and on the exams have helped these students in their acceptance to top universities in the US and abroad. In addition, their achievements have been crucial factors in scholarships and awards from College Board, the Ameson Foundation and many others.
  • 15% enrolled in top-25 US universities
  • 30% enrolled in top-50 US universities
  • 45% enrolled in top-80 US universities
  • 10% enrolled in top-100 US universities
In 2009, 11 students in the US High School Program received awards from the College Board for their achievements on the AP exams. Read more about it here.

Academic Exchanges

Ameson information

T
he Ameson Education and Culture Exchange Foundation is constantly building our network of universities and colleges with whom we have cooperations and partnerships. Through Ameson programs, hosting top university officials and professors in China and sending Chinese elite students to top universities in the U.S. for summer programs, the Ameson Foundation works closely with the best universities all over the world.

These efforts provide new ways to connect world-leading universities with elite Chinese students. As one of the Ameson Foundation's ultimate goals to contribute to the increase of global mindedness around the world, it is through efforts with these universities that the Ameson Foundation is making steps to achieve this goal.

Cooperations through the ACEIS

One of the primary ways the Ameson Foundation works with overseas universities is through the Ameson Chinese Elite Identification Scheme, or ACEIS. ACEIS is mutually beneficial to Chinese students and overseas universities by helping world-leading international universities identify top Chinese high school students but also by educating these students on the opportunities available to study overseas. To learn more about ACIES click here.
The universities in the ACIES include University of Cambridge (UK), University of Warwick (UK), University of Bristol (UK), University of Durham (UK), University of Edinburgh (UK), Aston University (UK), Royal Holloway, University of London (UK), University of Glasgow (UK), University of Melbourne (AUS), University of Auckland (NZ) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

Other Ameson-sponsored Programs

In addition to the universities involved with the ACEIS, the Ameson Foundation also has an increasing network of universities through hosting forums, dialogues and other meaningful events for university officials and professors. Through the ACE program and other similar forums and dialogues, the Ameson Foundation has hosted high-level university officials and professors from world-leading universities all over the world, including Harvard University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Cornell University, University of California at Los Angeles, Vanderbilt University and many more.

These opportunities give the overseas universities an opportunity to meet with students, parents, teachers and school administrators on a personal level in order to know more about elite Chinese students' abilities and interest in pursuing overseas education. Not only does it help cultivate educational resourses that can be shared on a global platform, but, more importantly, it brings together the interests of a diverse range of parties, from students to government officials to parents to professors. The Ameson Foundation is constantly looking for new ways to improve its education and culture exchanges through the universities with whom we have cooperations.

Professors coming to the Ameson Foundation

As the Ameson Foundation has expanded its repertoire of programs and cooperations with overseas universities, it has given the foundation many opportunities to host high-level officials and professors to come visit the Ameson Foundation offices and Ameson Institute schools. Professors have given presentations to staff and students on issues ranging from students’ psychological motivation in the classroom to changing curriculums in China’s education system.

During the fall of 2009, the Ameson Foundation hosted many events and seminars including presentations about university admissions by University of Oxford’s Dr. Paul Teulon and Vanderbilt University’s Dr. Douglas L Christiansen, presentations by German psychologist and professor Dr. Julius Kuhl’s on the psychological side of education, and a presentation by Harvard University professor Fernando M. Reimers’s on programs with Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Summer Exchanges for Elite Students

As a way to prepare students for university life abroad, the Ameson Foundation organizes various summer programs with overseas universities for elite Chinese students. During these programs students are able to participate in university courses, improve their English and learn about cultural differences. In the summer of 2008, Ameson Institute students attended a two-month summer program at Harvard University. They joined 1,000 other students from around the world to explore opportunities at Harvard University. The program provided an opportunity for students to attend Harvard courses, build friendships with students from around the world and travel around the U.S. learning about culture and customs.
